Podcasts - Share Your Favourites...

I know podcasts are very popular, and I have listened to a few writing-related ones, but I never seem to have the time to listen to them regularly, so I know I'm missing out on a lot of interesting and useful information.

I was catching up on a couple this afternoon...

So often now I hear podcasts mentioned on radio programmes, and elsewhere, that I thought they were younger than they actually are.

So many,
so little time...
Apparently the first podcast was created back in 2003. There was an interesting interview (in the Guardian from 2016) with Christopher Lydon; who along with software developer and Harvard colleague Dave Winer produced the first podcast.

If you want to create podcasts there's lots of information on the web. Here's some handy expert tips via Wired magazine.

Just as there are thousands of blogs about a wide variety of topics, there's just as many podcasts available, and of course finding the good ones can be difficult, so here's where you can help spread the word.

Concentrating just on podcasts that are about writing or writing related, I'd like your personal recommendations for those we should all be listening to-no self-promotion!

If there are enough suggestions I may create a page on the blog for your recommendations, so please use the comments form at the bottom of this post to share details of your favourites, and a little bit about what it is that keeps you going back.

Even if you don't have a podcast to suggest you're still welcome to comment.

To start us off, here's my recommendation; the AskALLi podcasts from the Alliance of Independent Authors. They have four different shows so there's something for varying skill levels.

So over to you; who should we be listening to?

I’ve recently started listening to Podcasts myself. For inspiration I would suggest Myths and Legends. They retell Myths from around the globe from King Arthur’s Court to ancient Greeks to Aztecs. Each podcast is about forty mins long, perfect for a commute.

I feel rather overfaced by all the 'stuff' on offer from podcasts, youtube, etc etc. Who has the time?!

Try “The Creative Penn” - great for writing and self-publishing news and tips.

Jack - thanks for that recommendation. Commuting, especially if you've got to go any distance-is ideal for listening to podcasts. Also a good distraction from crowded carriages!

Julia- I sympathise. I suspect it's easier for some writers to build into their time, perhaps like Jack on a regular commute, or walking the dog or other non-writing time.

Jenny- thanks for the recommendation. I've heard the name, but not listened to it. Sounds like a podcast I'd like to try.

I've only listened to an occasional one from Joanna Penn so far!

I love podcasts! I listen to two or three a week and I would listen to more if it wasn't for the fact I also listen to audio books.
Here's the thing, I only ever listen when I'm doing something else, such as brushing my teeth, cleansing my face, and getting ready for work. Or when I'm peeling vegetables, or hanging out washing, but most of all when I'm driving.

They are easy to download to your mobile phone/tablet or laptop and I'm signed up to several - here are my favourites in no particular order.

The Joined Up Writing Podcast - a regular show for writers and readers alike. Hosted by new crime writer, Wayne Kelly, you can hear loads of great interviews with authors, editors, publishers and anyone else who can help and inspire you on your Writing or Reading journey.

The Worried Writer - http://www.worriedwriter.com/ - The podcast is stuffed with advice to help you overcome self doubt, fear and procrastination. We all struggle with these things, and Sarah Painter shares tools and techniques that can transform your writing life, and interviews a different guest every month.

The Creative Penn - https://www.thecreativepenn.com/podcasts/ which features Joanna Penn and guests talking about writing and creativity, publishing options, book marketing and creative entrepreneurship.

Do give them a go, there are loads of tips and advice, and it's another way of connecting with the writing community.

Rosemary- thanks for the recommendation. Joanna Penn is clearly the podcast to listen to with the number who have suggested hers.

Maria- thanks for those recommendations. You've reminded me how flexible podcasts can be, listening while doing mundane tasks. I will definitely try the Creative Penn as it has been the most recommended.
